Funny Stories

This story is a true story that happened to me, and there are no exaggerations or truth-bendings. It is completely true. Date of Entry: 8/27/06

This is the third-to-last interesting story I have, I forgot about it until something on a forum jogged my memory. In fact, this story is kind of like my last story, but only the beginning part. I'll get right into it. I'm a member of the TreasureTrooper forum, and one time a member there IMed me, asking for some tips, I think. I can't remember exactly why he IMed me... but luckily, it's not important. Well, we got to talking about StudioTraffic (I just checked, the site redirects to a file sharing site now, ha, it was a scam all along). I had an account that I was just using to advertise TreasureTrooper, and I asked him if he wanted it. He said "Okay". Before I was going to give it to him, though, I wanted to change the password, since I used that password for everything else: TreasureTrooper, Gmail, AIM, the TT forum (which was hosted at a different site then it is now). I couldn't find out how to change the password (if there is even a way, I looked for a long time), so I convinced myself I was just being paranoid; he wouldn't try the password on my other stuff. So I gave it to him as-is. Then, he started talking about Runescape. He had some really powerful accounts, and he said he wanted to sell them (actually, he may have IMed me in the first place asking if I could sell his Runescape accounts... but I don't remember. It's more than likely, though), with my help (he didn't have an eBay account so I would sell it for him). So I looked on eBay, and they were going for a lot, so I said okay. But then something happened that would crush that deal...

It started with the TT forum. I saw a post that I couldn't remember making, not to mention the grammar was bad, and the "I"s weren't capitalized (I ALWAYS capitalize my "I"s). The first thing that came to my head was exactly what had happened: GameFreak (his AIM name is gamefreak and then some numbers, so I'll call him Gamefreak. I should have assigned a name to him earlier) had tried my password on the forum, got in, and was posting. Then, not only that, my TreasureTrooper account password was changed. He also got into my AIM and moved around some of the buddies on the list (interesting thing to do, aye?). My PayPal account was different from all the other passwords, but since he knew my Gmail password, he hacked that and did the "Forgot Password" thing on PayPal and got my password to that too. He had hacked everything, and had access to a PayPal account that had hundreds of dollars in it. I was freaked, I didn't know what to do. While all this was happening, I was talking to Gamefreak. He said his little brother had been watching his conversation, and he had seen my password, and he was doing everything. It was the biggest BS story I had ever heard, and I kept telling him to give everything back, but he insisted it was his little brother and still wanted me to sell his Runescape account! I ended up blocking him, and then contacted a TreasureTrooper admin and requested that my password be changed. He did change it, and when I logged in, I saw that the payment information had been changed, so that he would be paid instead. While I had my TT account back, my gmail, AIM, PayPal, and TT forum accounts were still compromised, and I didn't know what to do. However, then something happened, which turned the tables and gave me the power!

My friend dJ Beta Ice, who made some of the music in the Music section of the site, helped me solve the problem. He has some hacking skills (not much, but some), and made a program with GameMaker that allowed him to send emails from any address. So, I concocted a fake message, in which I pretended I was from the FBI. I told Gamefreak in the email what he was doing was illegal, and that he would get a large fine and go to court. Dj Beta Ice then sent the message to his email, with our email address being "jim@fbi.gov". Within minutes, Gamefreak contacted me on an alternate email address, confessing to EVERYTHING. TreasureTrooper, Gmail, hacking PayPal (but he said he wouldn't take any money, because that's really bad)... everything. Then, he began begging me to call off the FBI. I said I'd have to think about it, and he begged some more, so I said okay. I asked if he had learned a lesson, and he said yes, and he thanked me for showing him the error of his ways. I could see he was telling the truth. It's been a long time, and I've never told him that the FBI email was fake. I guess if he reads this, he'll find out. Even though I knew he would not hack me again, I had to change all my passwords. To this day, I have not changed them back to the pre-hacked password, and it has caused me minor, trivial complications, but complications nonetheless.

Perhaps the oddest thing about this, is that even though he hacked (although I have used the term loosely in this recount) so much, and caused me so much trouble, we became friends. I ended up selling his Runescape account (I couldn't sell the second one because when I put the second one up it got removed and I got a warning email) for $100 and keeping $20. We still talk to this day, although not as frequently. I don't think this story was as interesting as the others, but it's still good.
